In the third quarter of 2019, total hourly labour costs paid by employers in Bulgaria increased by 10% compared with the third quarter of 2018, according to early estimates published by the National Statistical Institute. A breakdown by economic activity shows that the highest rise in total hourly labour costs in the third quarter of 2019 compared with the third quarter of 2018 was recorded in the real estate sector (15%) and education (12.8%). In industry, total hourly labour costs grew by 8.3%, in services by 10.5%, and in construction by 10.1%.

Compared to 2017, the share of people at risk of poverty decreased by 0.2 percentage points and the share of those living in absolute poverty by 0.3 percentage points. In 2018, a person was considered to be at risk of poverty, if his or her equivalised monthly disposable income was less than €569, and in absolute poverty, if it was less than €215.
