Danish Building (Dansk Byggeri) and HK Privat settled a new 2-year agreement for 2,000 workers in parts of the building sector. The apprentice pay will increase with 2.25%. Further improvements are better parental leave, pensions contributions starting from the age of 18 years and improved seniority provisions.

A daylong strike by three trade unions active in Croatia Airlines, which started at 6am on Thursday 8 March, forced the national carrier to cancel 51% of flights, according to a company spokesperson. Aircrafts were flying according to a special schedule. The management had refused to accept the trade unions demands during talks on a new collective agreement, even though the unions had presented minimum demands to keep upright the existing agreements that expire 31 March 2012.

Italian metal workers union Fiom held an eight-hour nationwide strike on March 9 with ten of thousands workers marching in the streets of Rome against the government's plans to relax rules that give workers sweeping job security. The strike was also a protest against automaker Fiat's introduction of more flexible labour practices for its 86,000 Italian workers in a Dec. 13 contract.

Air traffic controllers' union, ATCA SR, and the Slovakian Ministry of Transport, Post and Telecommunications reached an agreement in the first week of March over improving safety in air services. The ministry guaranteed that it would meet all the union's safety demands and implement these within the timeframe requested. This included an agreement that serious consequences would ensue if national and international inspections revealed inadequacies on the part of management.

Belgian unions ACV-CSC Metea and MWB-FGTB, together with German union IG Metall, have strongly condemned the violent anti-trade union action at the German company Meister in Sprimont (Belgium) on February 26. After a week of protest action by the workforce against the decision to relocate to the Czech Republic, employees were faced with a terrifying raid by well-armed German "security agents" to remove equipment and material from the Belgian subsidiary. In the meantime the situation has calmed down and talks with the new management have started.

Allied Irish Banks announced that it is cutting its workforce by 19%, foreseeing 2500 jobs losses, half of which are planned before the end of the year. The Irish Bank Officials Association (IBOA) announced it will fight any compulsory redundancies and has started negotiating the redundancy package. The Irish parliament and government have confirmed they are watching the developments closely and have promised support for affected workers.

On the occasion of international women's day, the public and welfare sectors union JHL released a statement urging all social partners to invest in the elimination of the 18% gender pay gap that persists in Finland. JHL states that women's working conditions and wages should be specifically addressed in collective bargaining and furthermore calls for the implementation of the 1995 legislation obliging all companies of 30 employees or more to create and update equality plans.

UK unions have condemned government policies, particularly the reforms to the working tax credit, as female unfriendly. Trade unions claim women are hit hardest both by public sector cut backs, unemployment, child benefit and tax credit reform.

Members of DISK have organised a press declaration in front of the Ministry of Labour. In their statement the Turkish government is criticised for what is called a two-fold attack against workers. According to DISK a new draft bill is against ILO Conventions No: 87 and 98, the European Social Charter, the UN Economical, Social and Cultural Rights Convention and the 90th Amendment of the Constitution of the Republic Of Turkey. The planned National Employment Strategy Document will destroy severance pay, turn workers into rental slaves by introducing Private Work Agencies, lower minimum wage and generalise precarious work. A few days before the ILO office in Ankara had been occupied as part of the action.

In an attempt to keep its workers from striking, Carlsberg has convinced the Lithuanian government to re-classify its activity as `essential services'. Workers in essential services, previously limited to activities like emergency services and water, are banned from striking by law.
